school project 2026

Wall mural project with class 4b of the Schneeburg School

The Schneeburg School has long wanted a new design for its gymnasium wall. It is important that the students from class 4b get to participate and learn about graffiti art. For school projects, I consider it a given that we develop a design TOGETHER and incorporate the school's values, history, and identity. So, I went there and we met for a preliminary discussion to clarify all the details.

The sports hall next to the school

This is what the gym looked like before our project. The design featured soccer goals that were artistically incorporated into the artwork. It was essential to preserve these so the children could continue playing soccer against the wall; each grade level has its own goal.

The students' ideas

I gave the class an introduction to the street art and graffiti scene. We discussed the various possibilities offered by spray paint. Afterward, we brainstormed ideas for a shared design; it needed to fit the "Snow Castle" theme and incorporate elements such as knights, the castle itself, trolls, dragons, and so on.

The students' sketches

Creating a digital design based on the students' sketches

My digital draft sketch incorporates the students' ideas, combines them into a cohesive overall design, AND takes into account the existing positions of the soccer goals.

Base coat and preliminary drawing

The wall is being prepared. The day before the first practical session, I sketch the design and the individual outlines onto the wall so that the students will find it easier to fill in the elements later.

Here we go!

To enable the students to spray the—at times—highly complex design, I provide them with an introduction to handling the spray cans and the necessary techniques. I also cover the materials involved, potential hazards, and how to prevent workplace accidents.
